It’s business in the front, party at the back, and now the most iconic hairdo in history has its own dedicated festival in Australia.

The inaugural MulletFest will be hitting the small town of Kurri Kurri on February 24, being hosted by local hairdresser Laura Hawkins. The festival will award the best mullets in five categories – every day, grubby, ranga, ladies, and junior – as well as one overall winner, and one mullet to rule them all.

Hawkins feels very strongly about the mullet, claiming that Kurri Kurri is the Australian home of the hairstyle – and her husband even boasts a skullet with pride. “The mullet scene is very strong here,” she said in an interview with The Daily Telegraph. “We’ve already had 50 entries. There’s such a variety: there are the hardcore, tough mullets, but also the coiffed, well-cared-for kind.”

According to The Daily Telegraph, Kurri Kurri’s footy team has boasted plenty of mullets in recent seasons, and while the response to the competition has been strong – Hawkins still wants to see more entrants. “I see plenty of lady mullets walking around town but I know they’re not signed up,” she said. “I think they’re a bit shyer than the proud male mullet.”

Entrants to MulletFest will be judged on haircut, overall presentation and stage presence.

It’s all going down at The Chelmsford Hotel on February 24, and if you’re confident in your mullet, you can enter the competition right here. If you’re looking to spend a whole day looking at luscious mullets, our wouldn’t mind the short drive from Newcastle to Kurri Kurri, then head down to MulletFest and witness greatness in action.
