Social media giant Instagram is now removing Coronavirus-related content and accounts from the service unless it’s posted by a credible health organisation, in an attempt to stop misinformation and conspiracy theories that have been making the rounds on the app.

If users search for COVID-19 related info they’ll be presented with a message directing them to resources from the World Health Organisation and local health ministries.

The move comes a week after Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced the sites new ‘Coronavirus Information Center’, which will be appearing at the top of Facebook feeds with information from organisations such as the World Health Organisation and the CDC.

The top priority for us has been making sure people can get access to good trustworthy information about the outbreak from reliable sources” Zuckerberg said.

“We’ve seen one hoax that encourages people if you’re sick to drink bleach to cure it. That’s terrible, that’s going to cause imminent harm”.
