James Cameron was halfway through shooting the Avatar sequels in New Zealand when COVID-19 hit, bringing the entertainment industry to a standstill as countless productions around the world were forced to suspend filming. Now that things are getting under control, especially in New Zealand, Cameron is now keen to get back behind the camera, and we’re just as excited.

Touching down in New Zealand yesterday with his producer Jon Landau, the pair immediately entered into a 14-day government supervised quarantine, in order to be cleared to resume production on the long-awaited Avatar sequels. If all goes according to plan, the highly-anticipated sequels could resume production by the end of June.

Cameron and Landau aren’t alone however, with over 50 crew members on the sequel entering quarantine as well. It appears everyone working on the production is feeling understandably restless at the moment, and are rearing to get back on set, with Cameron telling Empire Magazine last month that the production shutdown had put a “major crimp” in the crew’s stride.

According to Cameron, he doesn’t even have that much left to do on the sequels, confirming that the motion capture elements on Avatar 2 & 3 are already completed, with all that’s left is to film a couple of live-action pickups. Thus, Cameron is still confident that Avatar 2 will meet it’s December 2021 release date. Fingers crossed he gets it done so we can see how the world of Pandora is doing all of these years later…
