Safe to say everyone was thinking the same…

It’s more than fair to say that the final season of Game Of Thrones was incredible divisive and controversial, countless fans criticising the seemingly rushed nature of it and the unsatisfying conclusion of numerous story arcs. Now that some time has passed and the final chapter is well and truly over, stars are beginning to open up on the final season, and it’s safe to say they’re confirming what we suspected all along.

Specifically, star Maisie Williams (who portrayed Arya on the show) has opened about her’s and Kit Harringtons reactions to the final season in a new interview with The Hollywood Reporter, pertaining to the conclusion of the Night King arc (warning, spoilers lie ahead).

“[Kit Harington] expected it to go [Jon Snow’s] way, too, and he even said, ‘It was going to go that way. Someone told me in Season three that I was going to kill The Night King,’” Williams said of the fate of the show’s main antagonist, who was killed by Williams’ character Arya Stark in “The Long Night.” “And then, he read the script, and it was Arya the whole time [laughs]. Yeah, I think it would’ve been too obvious. I’m glad that it was Arya, honestly. I think I had the best storyline of the final season.”

The choice to have Arya kill the Night King was definitely controversial, but did receive a lot of praise from audiences, with even Drake himself shouting out Williams last year for Arya’s moment.

Pretty interesting to hear, but not totally surprising. The decision for Arya to kill the Night King more than worked, but I think it’s fair to say that the show runners built up many character arcs and plot lines only to scrap or completely change them at the last second, in what seemed to be an attempt to just pull a fast one on viewers. This worked in some cases and really didn’t in others (Cersei, Jaimie, Daenerys, I could keep going), but no doubt that if the writers took more time with an extra season or even a couple of more episodes, a lot of their choices would’ve made more sense. Regardless, it’ll be interesting to hear more cast members’ thoughts on the finale as time goes on.

Check out the special moment of Arya killing the Night King below (and probably turn your screen brightness to full tbh, I have no clue what the lighting supervisors were doing for this episode in the finale).
