Earlier this week, Alison Wonderland announced her sophomore album Awake, and has now followed it up with the first taste of the record, ‘Church.’

Premiering yesterday via triple j, the single has now been uploaded online for our listening pleasure. Inspired by a toxic relationship, Alison says that “I was around people that weren’t good for me; toxic people who were not treating me well, borderline emotionally abusive and it brought me down to feeling quite weak. This was the song that triggered me to get out of it.”

“No-one should feel like it’s their fault for being treated badly by someone that would apparently love you… I really wanted someone to treat me how someone who goes to church treats church,” she continued. “I’m not a religious person so it was a weird thing to write about but it was the first thing that came to my mind. I felt like shouting at that person ‘I wish you would treat me like church! Praise me, make me feel like I’m worth something’.”

The song – which revolves around Alison’s vocals and a powerfully uplifting hook – was produced with the help of Carlo ‘Illangelo’ Montagnese (The Weeknd, Post Malone) and co-written with Joel Little (Lorde, Sam Smith). Listen to ‘Church’ below, and stay tuned for more details from Awake to arrive soon. There’s no release date for the album as of yet, but let’s hope for a national Australian tour when it drops:
