Mirrors, flowers and creeping around – Girl York give us the inside word on their ‘Lost At Sea’ clip.

Having caught our attention a couple of months back with ‘Dandies’ – the first single from their sophomore EP Dreaming In 505 – Perth trio Girl York are at again with a visually entrancing clip for latest single ‘Lost At Sea’. The tune is more of the verbed out, 90’s-inspired slacker rock that is becoming synonymous with the group, with the lyrics reflecting life’s “could-have-beens”.

“Ultimately the song is about being completely lost in life, and pleading that it’s not you that has to endure a wasted life, because you haven’t lived, you haven’t loved. It’s only when it’s too late that you realise what you should do, and this haunts you without respite,” frontman Shaun Martin says.

The accompanying video, which was directed by Sara Sweens follows three characters from a kind of ‘birth’, along their journey towards the ocean. Throughout the clip there’s a balance of vast drone landscapes and tighter shots of the grass and wildflowers, which makes for some nice points of juxtaposition as our protagonists creep along towards their goal.

Take a look at some of behind the scenes snaps from the clip below, along with some captions from Shaun explaining just what was going down:

Beach
The beach shot was the first place we filmed, we got to the beach in the morning hoping it would be quiet but because it was such nice weather it was packed! The section of beach we were in your actually not suppose to swim in because of rips and it’s close to rocks but it was the only patch of beach that was empty, it was pretty rough but everyone braved it and swam out for the underwater shots you see at the end of the music video.

Matt Shooting
Here Matt (director of photography) is shooting Sam with a mirror, we filmed these shots in a really beautiful wildflower patch next to the hay fields where we did the drone shots. Sarah (the director) wanted the actors to be weird creatures and came up with the mirror idea to make the actors look distorted, we were so happy with these shots!

Mirror
This is another shot in the wildflowers this time with Brooke…what you don’t see is there were a shit load of bugs flying around while we were trying to shoot and we all got eaten alive by flies, a massive spider actually crawled on Brooke while we were taking this photo but we didn’t tell her until after just in case she freaked out…which she did.

Sunset
This was the last location of the day! The footage here didn’t actually make it into the video but we got everyone to go crazy and chase around the sheep…We spent about 7 hours shooting the music video and had to drive an hour out to the farm from Perth so it ended up being a long day. On the way home Matt’s car, unfortunately, broke down about 20 minutes after leaving..luckily my brother has a car trailer so we came and picked up the car and took it back to the farm and everyone squeezed into our manager’s car to get home!

Wheatfield
As a kid growing up on the farm one of my favourite things to do was go into the wheat crop and just lay down so I thought it would be great to do a shot of everyone doing that, Here we are figuring out were we want everyone to go – the wheat is so tall you can’t even see the actors laying down in this photo.

Laying Down
Here are the actors lying down in the wheat field, they are about to have a huge, heavy mirror put on top of their faces. Sam (one of the actors) has really bad hay fever so after this shot his whole body swelled up and broke out into a rash (poor guy) – we went through a whole packet of Telfast during the day because everyone’s allergies were going crazy.
