We had a chat with the Melbourne-based singer about his sound, style and scene.

Listening to Wesley Fuller’s debut 2017 album Inner City Dream is like having dip in the ocean on a hot summer’s day – it’s immersive, cool, and once you’re in, you don’t want to get out of it. It’s a tasty kaleidoscope of super catchy tunes with flavours spanning decades and genres, which Fuller says is due to a revolving wheel of influences.

“I like to change it up all the time… I go through fazes. I’m influenced by a bunch of diverse things from 60’s baroque sunshine pop and psychedelic freakbeat stuff right through to the 70s glam and funk and 80’s new wave stuff. I like the tight rhythms of the late 70’s early 80’s and also the melodic ideas of the 60’s and fusing those two things together.”

Originally hailing from Fremantle in Western Australia, Fuller moved to Melbourne in 2013 and took on a unique approach to making friends and becoming part of the music community in his new home.

“I basically moved here and joined every band that I could…. Playing in a bunch of bands and I got to meet a whole lot of people from the Melbourne music scene. Then in 2015, I decided to finally do my own thing,” says Fuller.

Moving out and starting somewhere new influenced the (very) relatable concepts of Inner City Dream – we all know what it’s like to look at our bank account at the end of the week and realise that everything has been sucked out by the landlord.

“It was written at a stage of my life when I was just kinda getting a grasp of what it meant to be living in inner city Melbourne and pay crazy rent to live in a pretty crappy share house. Some of the themes are trying to make ends meet and get your head around this whole social environment and the economics of it, how absurd house prices and rent are, and whether it’s all kind of worth it,” says Fuller.

After listening to this album, we definitely think it was worth it! Get yourself familiar with Wesley Fuller’s amazing debut online now and be sure to catch him when the ‘Inner City Dreams Tour’ rolls into your town. Tickets and info here.
