Big Words serve up a big summer mood.

No longer one of Melbourne’s best kept secrets, the cat is well and truly out of the bag when it comes to Big Words. Following the success of their 2017 debut EP Hollywood, A Beautiful Coincidence, and the very warmly received double-sided single, ‘Slow Dance / Girl With The Golden Skin’, around this time last year, 2019 has seen the 5-piece outfit drop a pair of groovy alternative r&b slaps. ‘Cicada’, out today via Daily Night/Carolina Australia, is a breezy summertime track blending elements of soul, hip-hop & electronica.

Fittingly, the song leans in gently with a sample that we can only assume was taken from a live recording of cicadas chirping away at producer Will Scullin’s home studio. The nice kind of cicada chatter; The natural soundtrack to Australian summer sunsets kind, as opposed to the kind that screams “WAKE UP” during a blissful afternoon nap on day five of a test-match. That quickly fades into intricate hip-hop style production and experimentation with fresh and woozy sounds that Kieran Lee glides over effortlessly.

Catch big Frank Ocean energy around the 2:30 mark and catch Big Words at main stage festival slots around Australia this summer – kicking off with Grapevine Gathering next weekend alongside Two Door Cinema Club and Flight Facilities. Get in a sunny mood and give ‘Cicada’ a first spin below:
