This morning, the Internet was flooded with reports that Odd Future head honcho Tyler, The Creator had been banned from Australia, and that his Cherry Bomb Australian tour – scheduled for September – had been cancelled. The rapper himself broke the news on his Twitter feed:

The controversy stems from his long-winded conflict with the Collective Shout organisation – who claim that his lyrics promote misogyny and violence against women. On his last tour in 2013, Tyler aimed verbal abuse at a member of the group who campaigned to have him banned:

Promoters Frontier have since issued a statement on the upcoming tour, saying that while the Department of Immigration has raised issues with his visa, it has not yet been denied:

With respect to media reports that Tyler the Creator’s visa has been refused, Frontier would like to advise that this is not the case. The department for immigration has raised issues with the visa application but it has not been refused and Frontier will update ticket holders as soon as more information comes to hand.

It will be interesting to see how this one pans out – and what precedent it sets for the already fragmented relationship between international hip-hop stars and Australian tours.
