It seems Byron Bay was host to a slew of illegal parties over the weekend, with around 200 backpackers reportedly gathering at Belongil for an illegal beach party that is the literal definition of a “super spreader event.”
Locals from the area took to social media to voice their disgust, writing “There were smouldering logs from the fire and broken glass throughout the sand. The sand had so much buried trash that I was stepping on buried bottles, cans and trash of every description. This is bloody disgusting” along with photos of the damage.
“The beach needs patrolling to stop this c**p, maybe locals that live nearby can report to the police.”
It seems Tweed and Byron Police were called to break up the gathering on Sunday morning, but the damage had already been done. Belongil wasn’t the only beach to cop it as well, with the Main Beach similarly being flooded with around 300 people.
Pretty shit, but Tweed/Byron Police have a message to those venturing to Byron over the New Year, stating that “this year is very different, there will be no large gatherings, no dance parties in the park. Social distancing is the new normal, and we all have to do our bit to stop the spread.”
