Can we get a collab album next please?

Get ready to feel heard, empowered and just totally inspired, as multi-instrumentalist extraordinaire/ ray of sunshine G Flip has today dropped her new single ‘Queen’ with Brooklyn-based sonic healer mxmtoon. Coming off a crazy 2020 that saw her dominate the charts, release an iconic Crocs collaboration and accomplish numerous more feats, it seems she’s totally set on taking it to the next level in 2021, and she starts that journey today with what’s already one of the sweetest & most undeniably-tender tracks of the year.

The tune sees the Melbourne lyrical-hummer slow it all the way down as she revels in gorgeously-uplifting vibes, her powerhouse vocals meshing just perfectly with mxmtoon’s one-in-a-million-tone. You get a real sense of collaborative spirit from the pair, the tune emanating this intoxicating air of love that’s filled to the brim with mutual support and understanding. Production-wise they’re just as on point (no surprises here!), with whimsical synth and guitar lines (and an extremely satisfying bass), crafting this wishful melting pot that overflows with the sincerest of heart. I know it’s 2021, but the tune has this soul-drenched resonance to it that beautifully calls it back to the soul pioneers of the 60s and 70s, proving that the constraints of time, genre and place can be easily overcome when you’ve got enough love in the tank.

The accompanying video (directed by Adam Kiers) sees the pair capture the down-to-earth aura that defines the relationship between lovers, mothers, daughters, sisters and all facets of the family unit, curating a totally holistic snapshot of familial fulfilment. We also get a lovely appearance from G Flip and mxmtoon themselves, with G Flip hitting the drums while mxmtoon hums her lyrical blessings over Zoom (honestly some of the best zoom singing I’ve ever seen). The vid as a whole is just a living, unfurling embodiment of everything the two artists stand for: Love, truth, understanding and sincerity of the purest type.

Opening up on the inspiration behind the tune and visual, G Flip gets deep on the queens who’ve made an impact on her life, stating “Queen was written about the strong women around me, the queens that raised me and the queens I’ve met through my years.

“To me a queen embodies power and strength; they embrace all they are fiercely yet gracefully,” with mxmtoon herself adding “‘Queen’ is a power anthem for any person, and I’m so excited for people to love it as much as we do!”

Pretty bloody on point. Be sure to buy/ stream ‘Queen’ here.
