In news that will no doubt be having people watch the skies with just a little more caution, certain snakes have learnt how to fly, which sounds totally believable considering the year we’ve had.

But don’t worry, the snake in question is the Chrysopelea paradise or the paradise tree snake, which is native to South and Southeast Asia, who are known for propelling themselves through the air. To study this unusual facet of nature, U.S. scientists are running tests & experiments on the tree snake to find out their secret. So far, their research has found that the snake makes an undulating motion as it moves through the air – a move that all snakes make when they’re on the ground.

One theory they’ve come up with is that the underrating move stabilises the snake in the air, allowing it to glide instead of tumble. It also allows them to cover large distances horizontally.

“We have a visceral response to snakes,” Yeaton said. “Then the idea that this animal can then fly is very unsettling to people,” study leader Isaac Yeaton said.
