Just recently, we added Kendrick Lamar to the list of potential acts to headline Splendour In The Grass 2018.

The reasoning? He’s appearing on the bill for Fuji Rock Festival, an event that traditionally shares a couple of headliners with Byron Bay’s flagship festival. Alongside Kendrick, the Fuji Rock lineup also features Anderson. Paak, Skrillex, ODESZA, and longtime indie heroes MGMT. So while all of those acts are also possibly playing Splendour, MGMT have added substantial weight to rumours of an Australian appearance with comments made in an interview with TheMusic.com.au.

In the interview, frontman Andrew VanWyngarden addressed an Australian tour when he was asked about Splendour rumours. “There is something in the pipeline,” he said. “I’m not sure when things are announced. But, yeah, we’ll be setting foot on Australian soil this year, for sure.”

With confirmation of an MGMT tour sometime in 2018, and the group’s place on the Fuji Rock lineup, it’s looking very likely that they’ll be heading down under for Splendour. If that’s the case, it’ll be the first time that MGMT have appeared at the festival since 2009. And it seems like there’s no better time than now for MGMT, who are fresh off releasing their fourth album Little Dark Age just last weekend.

We’re staying hopeful for an MGMT announcement soon, especially after The Wombats confirmed their place on the Splendour lineup, and Arctic Monkeys also looking like a strong possibility. In the meantime, listen to Little Dark Age below:
