A day in Sydney with the Brooklyn trio.

In between Nicki Minaj guest verses and Gucci Mane mixtapes, Brooklyn trio Wet were one of the acts to really capture our ears in 2014. Their down-tempo, pensive brand of R&B is nothing short of gorgeous, and is bound to have your body swaying in slow-motion.

The band recently took a trip to Australia, touring alongside London Grammar and playing a few shows of their own, too. We caught up with the talented (and extremely photogenic) crew for a day in Sydney – here’s how it went down:

We meet up with Kelly & Marty of Wet in Surry Hills – these guys are from Brooklyn, so you know they’ve got to own at least one varsity jacket. The missing link of the trio is Joe, who’s running a little late – but we forgive Joe, because we love Joe. Hot tip: The waiter in the cafe next door looks like James Franco. #FACTSONLY

Joe is here! God bless Joe. The three have a little break in their schedule, so we decide to have a little cruise around the area – Surry Hills, 2010 represent. Is it always so easy for these guys to look effortlessly cool 24/7/365? Damn, this could be the contemporary version of The Beatles’ Abbey Road cover for all we know.

The boys have a quick refueling pit stop for coffee, while we discuss Mexican food chains with Kelly outside – a very polarising issue on Australia’s political landscape. While we think about doing the Mad Mex 1 kilogram burrito challenge, Kelly tells us that back home they don’t have guacamole because of an avocado shortage. What the hell? Why isn’t this in the news yet? We might send a care package with some very rare avocados to New York soon. #SOS #CHIPOTLEGANG

We hit Cream On Crown aka the Mecca of vintage shirts, and Wet seem to be pretty happy with the range – Marty even picks up a few items for himself, while I’m still thinking about buying that Batman tee at the front. Cool story: This store had a NWO Wolfpack shirt a few months ago, I didn’t buy it and am still crying myself to sleep over it. If Scott Hall wasn’t your childhood hero, you were raised wrong and probably have terrible parents. Head over to Cream on Crown and spend your life savings.

We head back to The Winery just in time for some interviews – in the champagne room which sounds like just the type of place we want to be on a Tuesday afternoon. @CHAMPAGNEPAPI #CHAMPAGNESHOWERS

The three get chatting to Music Feeds about touring with London Grammar and their debut album, set to drop this Fall. Trust us when we say that you should not sleep on these guys – have a listen to their self-titled EP for a taste of R&B without the cheese, and definitely without the Pitbull guest verses.

Laughs with band manager, Taylor.

We quickly drop into a book store where Joe picks up ‘Girl in a Band: A Memoir’ by Kim Gordon, the woman who did about a zillion things as a member of the legendary Sonic Youth. She also holds the very memorable accolade of appearing in The Simpsons when Homer decides to join the Hullabalooza tour. Also in this episode: Cypress Hill remixing ‘Insane In The Brain’ with the London Symphony Orchestra. Kelly is keen on the book too, so they decide to split it. Sharing is caring, pals.

We take Wet to Oxford Art Factory for sound check. They tell us that they started off as three friends who just jammed for fun, writing ‘Dream’ – a song that eventually became their EP opener and a kickstarter to their career. Seeing their name (in caps lock) above a venue across the world must be pretty special, especially when they’re headlining the show.

And now begins the arduous process of untangling cords and unpacking instruments.

lukelattywet24-11

All done! The band go through three songs while ironing out the kinks with the in-house sound equipment.

lukelattywet24-12

Kelly makes sure that everything sounds tip-top at the front of house. Her voice is fucking amazing, we feel like we’re hearing an angel’s lullaby in the club.

lukelattywet24-13

Sound check is done. Power-walking to lunch because we need those slow-burning carbohydrates if we’re going to make it to tonight’s show. Wet’s squad formation is still impeccable.

lukelattywet24-14

Decision, decisions.

lukelattywet24-15

Chicken, pumpkin and feta salad, crab and fresh garden greens, with champagne and cider to wet the whistle. We’re feeling a little bit fancy at the moment since we usually live off Mi Goreng and bin scraps, it’s a shame that this song wasn’t playing in the background as we downed a little bubbly.

lukelattywet24-16

Food coma. Back to the hotel for a little snooze before tonight’s performance.

lukelattywet24-17

After that little siesta, show preparation begins. Marty and Joe have a little chuckle over an email joke. BRB, spending the rest of the night searching eBay for a Yale cap.

lukelattywet24-18

Kelly killing it in a cable-knit sweater, talking to Dan of London Grammar who’s come down to support his touring pals. Can you feel the love?

lukelattywet24-19

The lads with blogger Nick Kelly – Marty trialing his new Zoolander pose. Who the hell is Ben Stiller? We’re all about this photo.

lukelattywet24-20

Showtime! Wet step onstage and everybody is yelling.

lukelattywet24-21

You know what rules? Actual instruments at a live show.

lukelattywet24-22

Fan favourite ‘You’re The Best’ drops, which is exactly how we feel about Wet. <3 <3 <3

lukelattywet24-23

Remember how we said Kelly’s voice is damn near angelic? Yep, it sounds even better at the real show – and the luminescent glow of the lights behind her have us convinced: She is a human angel sent to us by the musical gods.

lukelattywet24-24

Post-show at the infamous Oxford Art Factory green room. Shoutout to the venue management for always keeping the fridge in here stacked with a healthy range of beverages. Also, thanks to Wet – we can’t wait for the debut album.
