Playing in Wollongong this Sunday.

We’re heading north this Sunday, with Summer Bright Lager’s Summer Sessions hitting Coolangatta.

On the bill are Middle Kids, Cub Sport and the later local addition of Ivey, it’s looking to be a swell arvo down at The Coolangatta Hotel. Since emerging in 2015 with the Triple J Unearthed High competition, Ivey have impressed with their guitar-driven pop tunes, with their latest gem ‘Out of Time’ simply oozing with summer vibes.

Having impressed us a Bigsound in nearby Brisbane, we’re looking forward to catching Ivey at Coolangatta this Sunday. Ahead of the gig, we sat down with Ivey to talk about their stellar growth and upcoming shows. Read it all, and catch them this weekend from 3:00pm:

You guys headed over to Europe earlier this year. What was happening over there?

Myself (Lachie) and Matt (the drummer) are brothers, so Europe was just a holiday for us, at the same time Millie went to New Zealand so we all got a bit of time off. The start of the year was full of shows, recording and writing so the holiday gave us time to breathe and come into the second half of the year with our heads on straight.

Ivey have played some live shows and some acoustic shows this year. Which do you prefer, and why?

Well weirdly enough, we were kind of an acoustic band when we started, so I guess when we play intimate acoustic sets it takes us back to when we were a band with no following, who still all went to school and played shitty covers in Turkish Restaurants haha. However, we do love playing proper live shows, there’s a lot more energy to give that way.

Looking back on Triple J Unearthed High, what was the biggest lesson you learned from the experience?

There was a lot to learn from Unearthed High. It was a humbling experience, realising there are so many great potential artists out there still in school, and it also gave us a hunger and a passion. It was a platform that allowed us to reach a wider audience (even if we never made finalists) and allowed us to realise that if your mindset and is right and determination strong, that you can become whatever you want to be.

How was Bigsound this year? Did you guys make any new friends?

Bigsound was really cool. This is the first year we actually played a set which was really great. We made loads of new friends, as well as saw old friends, it was really nice to catch up with the Hockey Dad and Ocean Alley boys as well as meeting Ruby Fields for the first time, she’s sick. All round good time running amuck around Brissy.

Do you think being in a band during your pivotal teenage years has made you grow up faster?

In a way yes, especially for Millie. We went from playing to nobody, and then after the 2015 Unearthed High competition – we didn’t make the finals – suddenly we were playing shows with artists we idolised and got exposed to lot of cool shit.

Tell us about your new single ‘Out of Time’ – was it inspired by any real-life incident in particular?

‘Out of Time’ is reflection upon my previous relationship, my flaws and my obsessively romantic personality. This song tells the story of my addictive personality within a relationship, and how it was beautiful but also scary at the same time.

What can we expect from your performance on the SBL tour?

Energy, chorus pedals, dancing and cover of The Beatles.
