Off to an amazing start…

Venturing within and emerging with an unfiltered snapshot of life as a young creative, Sydney’s LKGD has today come through with his debut solo single ‘Star 69’. The young OG wastes no time reaching deep into his feels (and consequently our own), setting the stage with a mellow AF piano line that throws it back to the glory days of Slow Jam. By the time he enters with those heartfelt vocals, you’re completely arrested to the vision of the beat, LKGD’s production prowess on full display as he crafts a refined sonic artwork of gorgeous proportions. New Zealand reggae-veteran Sammy J gets in on the action as well, blessing us with fluttery vocals that hit hard and fast with an onslaught of soul and spirit.

We gotta talk about the accompanying video as well. Here LKGD captures the hunger that defines so many young Aussie artists, all the while paying tribute to the R&B and neo-soul titans that came before. Drawing from a sublime colour-palette that eases the psyche, LKGD curates a completely focused experience just perfect for the intricacy with which he moves, maximising the minimalism of dimly lit rooms and fresh whips to the perfect degree.

Born in the fire of duress and hardship, LKGD reminisces “I’ll never forget the day I wrote ‘Star 69’. It was the night after our younger brother’s deegy birthday. It’s hard to forget because it was the night half of the ‘92’ boys were arrested for no reason. Anyway, I was out in Lethbridge Park waiting for the boys to be released and the melody was just stuck in my head. The boys came home and laid it the next day and here we are. That was back in 2018.”

Clearly having an old head on young shoulders, LKGD gets deep on the moments that have shaped his life, proving that even though he’s a serious player as a part of Planet Vegeta, he can more than hold his own when it’s just him behind the mic. The tune displays a mastery of the R&B genre that defies limit and bound, and no doubt that if he keeps coming through with heat like this, the Sydney scene is gonna be put on notice real quick. Make sure to keep up with him on Facebook and Instagram to be the first to know what the musical gem does best.
