With the first of his Gocsy Tonight shows kicking off this month, we caught up with Australia’s favourite everyman.

What’s your favourite Gocsy performance? The first time his mullet graced my screen was when I stumbled across his Round The Twist send up a while back. Even if I couldn’t tell whether the bumbling delivery of his lines was accidental or part of the script, I knew then and there that it was some pretty funny shit.

Naturally, since then, I’ve watched everything he’s put out. From his hilarious food factory tours, kitchen creations and other Aussie ‘90s satirical shorts, it’s clear that he has a gift for timing and farce. Taking the piss seems to come naturally to him (even more than ‘Bronson’ in the ep below), though Gocsy comes off as warm and loveable – a factor that has contributed to his growing celebrity status in Australia.

Now he’s taken the talk show format made famous by Carson, Letterman and Leno, and formulated a new routine: Gocsy Tonight. He’ll be wheeling it out on the road from March through to May and we are anitcipating some seriously hilarious and choatically improvisational performances. Check out the dates and ticket info below, just under our interview with the man himself:

You’ve played Bronson from ‘Round The Twist’ and Drazic from ‘Heartbreak High’. Are there any other 90s TV show characters that you reckon you’d be able to take down?

Maybe captain planet – I’ve got the mullet just have to work on the rig, plus he sends a pretty good message.

Your ‘Gocsy Tonight’ show is taking on that classic late-night talk show format, but with a Gocsy twist. Who would be the celebrity you’d most like to have on and why?

My favourite musician is John Darnielle from the band The Mountain Goats so that would be great. Otherwise maybe a sports legend like Usain Bolt or somebody from The Simpsons..

Do you consider yourself to be more of an actor or comedian?

I think I am a comedian first and foremost – if I am making people happy and/or laughing that is my priority – but I love acting!

You don’t seem to mind sharing pics of the food you eat whilst out and about/on the road with your followers. What would be your death row last meal?

Geeze death row – what did I do? Hope it was a good crime haha…I think would have to go with a nice big parmigiana.. but I am partial to laksa as well.

What’s your specialty at home?

At home we have a lot of spaghetti bolognese, or chicken and rice – occasionally we go out to vietnamese for a treat.

While we’re chatting, tell us about when you came up with the flavoured milk holder idea. Was it a bolt of lightning or an idea that had been simmering for a while?

Actually I have to be honest it was my mate Mark’s idea – but I didn’t shoot it down and as they say behind every good idea is somebody who says “yeah not bad”. Having said that I have been keen for a while to add to my merch range and it goes hand in hand really.

You’ve definitely got a unique style when it comes to doing stand up. What comedians have influenced you over the years?

My favourite comedian was Mitch Hedberg (RIP) but also Chris Farley (also RIP) was a huge influence, plus Eric Bana, Conan O’Brien, Jim Carey.

What’s been your strangest experience on stage?

My strangest experience on stage was probably when I performed in rollerblades or somebody in the audience headbutted somebody.

Has there ever been a show where the audience hasn’t “got” you?

Definitely had some rough shows over the years – generally if I’m booked as part of something else like a footy awards night or something – if it’s my own show it usually goes ok.

What do you think is the most underrated town in Australia and why?

Most underrated town in Australia is Dubbo. Got a zoo, we used to stay there when I was a kid when we drove from Brisbane to Melbourne, and it’s fun to say.

What can people expect when they come to see you on this tour?

On this tour people can expect to see fun and variety – guests, trivia, chats, karaoke – bit of everything really but hopefully a good night out with a few laughs.
