It’s no secret that Suicide Squad was a tad underwhelming.

We hosted an article where Andrew Levins outlined 4000 reasons you shouldn’t see the film, while this video went through all 157 of its fatal errors. Still, despite the scathing reviews and boos, the film was a huge commercial success – but director David Ayer has revealed that he does agree with some of his critics.

Taking to Twitter, Ayer says that he wishes he had a time machine to go back and fix Suicide Squad, mainly that he’d “make Joker the main villain and engineer a more grounded story.” He also says that “nothing hurts more than to pick up a newspaper and see a couple years of your blood, sweat and tears ripped to shreds. The hate game is strong out there.”

Still, Ayer will have a chance to win back the fans with Gotham City Sirens – the spin-off film led by standout character Harley Quinn, portrayed by Australia’s own Margot Robbie. In the meantime, read Ayer’s entire pensive reflection below, and ponder whether you really did hate Suicide Squad that much:
