Now, Drizzy has once again caught attention for his onstage remarks in Melbourne, the final city he’ll visit on his Australian ‘Boy Meets World’ tour. Anybody who’s seen Drake on this run of shows knows that he spends a segment of his show pointing out and acknowledging punters in the audience – and this time, he spotted one attendee wearing a ‘Free Meek Mill’ shirt. Surprisingly, Drake said “Free Meek Mill too. You right.”
Meek Mill was recently imprisoned for two to four years for violating his probation, which led to widespread protests in Philadelphia. Hip-hop mogul Jay Z also condemned the harsh punishment, writing a piece on the New York Times stating that “the criminal justice system stalks black people like Meek Mill… probation is a trap and we must fight for Meek and everyone else unjustly sent to prison.”
Drake and Meek Mill have a long and turbulent history, with the two rappers trading plenty of words and tracks aimed at each other, with Drizzy famously dropping the colossal diss ‘Back 2 Back’ in 2015. While their disdain for each other has been long documented, is Drake seeing the bigger picture and focusing on the social issues that are highlighted by Meek’s imprisonment? Or has he simply moved on from the war of words?
