Miss Universe has ended for another year, and this time it was South Africa’s Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters who brought the crown to the country for the first time since 1978.

The 22-year-old recently beat 91 other entrants in the Miss Universe competition, and clearly impressed with her address to the audience. “As Miss Universe you have to be confident in who you are as an individual. And Miss Universe is a woman that has overcome many fears and by that she is able to help other women to overcome their fears. She is a woman that nothing is ever too much to ask for and I think that is exactly who I am,” she said in the Final Word round.

Nel-Peters is a recent graduate of North West University, where she earned a degree in Business Management. Originally from Sedgefield in the Western Cape, she enjoys activities from scrapbooking to hiking, and was elected as the Deputy Junior Mayor of the George City Council in her high school years. Following Margaret Gardiner’s aforementioned Miss Universe victory in 1978, Nel-Peters is the second South African to take home the title.
