His father, Drew Muirhead was Australia’s first DMC DJ title winner in 1988, also appearing on early local hip-hop releases like Down Under By Law. Having been exposed to hip-hop and house from a young age, it was also his old man who gave him his first copy of Logic Pro when he was 13 years old, prompting him to write his own rhymes and craft his own tracks to perform in the playground.
Since then, MACCA has continued to evolve as an emcee, now counting himself as a member of ‘Da Mutantz’ clique alongside Geek, Cult Shotta (who are performing a gig tonight at FOUNDRY616, if you’re around) and Selasie Wussah. Today, MACCA premieres his own aptly-titled crossover tune ‘Dance With Me,’ where he rides solo over a slick beat produced by KeemtheCipher.
Hip-hop and dance hasn’t always been peanut butter and jelly – a few years back, you could find every washed-up rapper jumping on big-room EDM beats in the hopes of finding a second life. However, in later years the two worlds have been bridging together in more meaningful ways – see the catalogues of (recent Australian visitor) Kaytranada and (incoming Australian visitor) Goldlink. These two artists are clear influences on the house-flavoured ‘Dance With Me,’ which runs through the all too familiar narrative of finding love on the dancefloor.
