Since their inception a couple of years back, local faves Papaya Tree have been steadily building a reputation for their wildly fun live shows and groovy tunes. Their latest tune ‘Radar’ is a perfect example of the way these guys can get you in the mood to boogie within a matter of seconds, though there’s a message behind the music as well.
“The song is about and dedicated to the people who live outside the downing centre courts. It’s not a charity case or anything like that, it’s more of our way of highlighting the fact that we should pay more respect to everyone; we’re all out here doing it,” singe Lee McDermott says.
They’ll be playing a bunch of shows around town in support of the new single, including a launch at The Lansdowne presented by Sydney streetwear champions Altamunted, and we get the feeling that anything could happen when these two entities get together for an event.
“You can expect a wall to wall mess. What of? You’ll have to come and see. You can always back on a little bit of a celebratory kiss at the end,” Lee says. “We fucking love what Altamunted is doing, evolving from being a brand to a cult following; running gigs and events. Not many people are doing that in Sydney and even less are doing it well.”
This year is only getting bigger for Papaya Tree, having just signed a booking deal they’ll be hoonin’ and tunin’ around the country in the coming months, so it’s probably best to catch them at The Lansdowne this Sunday before they take off – info here.
