While he’s certainly got a preference for the bass-heavy side of music, Spenda C has earned himself a reputation for being one of the more genre-defying beat-makers in Australia, with his career spanning from the moombahton flavours of The Mane Thing to the punk rock roots featured on The Plug EP. Today, he returns with another project called Bone Collector that sees him connect with some of Australia’s emerging hip-hop talents, essentially flipping the script on the traditional mixtape format.
“The concept behind the Bone Collector project was to approach it the way a rapper would approach making a mixtape… Where as a rapper collects a bunch of beats and then raps over them, I wanted to flip that idea and collect a bunch of vocals from some of my favourite artists and build the songs around them,” Spenda says.
“For me, collaboration is an exercise in trust. Most of the original beats I sent out were really just bare bones and have evolved so much from the early demos into the songs they are now. I’m really proud of this project and super thankful to all the amazing artists who believed in the vision.”
The project features the likes of Carmouflage Rose, Cult Shotta and Midas.Gold, with Spenda showing a clear preference for Australian rappers incorporating a more global, club-ready sound. And there’s even a little international talent thrown into ‘Family Mart’ – a hyperactive track honouring the favoured Japanese convenience store.
