The Newcastle bluesman delivers an addictive debut that is equal parts kinky and wicked.
Plucking his way up and down the East Coast for a couple of years now, Nicholas Connors has a real knack for sucking audiences into his world. Ask anyone who’s caught him playing in a city bar or at a festival somewhere inland, and they’ll tell you that there’s something intoxicating about the way he inhabits a stage and preaches from his noirish diary.
‘Sick Love Song,’ which is taken from his forthcoming debut Sick Love Songs, is a perfect example of his ability to grab a listener and shake them silly. Here he amplifies the traditional blues/rock ‘n’ roll foundations of the song with a Nick Cave-like vocal performance that is seemingly untameable, but also gifts melodic hooks you’ll be singing along to by the second listen.
Lyrically the song is something of a reflective ode to young love and life. “So the song’s about all the fuckups, mistakes and ridiculous occurrences that are ongoing in a young person’s explorative love life,” Nicholas says.
Shot in director Charlie Hardy’s studio, the clip explores our obsession with image and is weirdly reminiscent of the Buffalo Bill dancing scene from Silence Of The Lambs. “The clip is very much about my habit of spending too much time in front of the mirror,” he says. “I’m slowly realising that loving yourself a little bit is good, but over indulgence is a bit sick and really breaks down on what you can do in a day. I wanted to explore that in a vague sort of way.”
