LOL
The future of laughing.

It’s pretty easy now-a-days to enjoy a quick laugh – be it a vintage meme about loving a hefty rig, a talking dog on YouTube, a friend’s Insta post with Chanel spelled incorrectly or anything Tony Abbott says without stuttering. Laughs, laughs, everywhere laughs. So why are sitcoms being cancelled at record rates and cinema takings on comedy films plummeting?

That’s a good questions and we’re not here to answer that. Apologies if we mislead you. But here’s a hint – Kevin James. Follow the cronut trail and the answer you shall discover.

Anywho, despite prince of comedy Bob Odenkirk (of Better Call Saul fame for those of you unfamiliar) declaring comedy is dead and warning youngsters to get out because someone pooed in the pool, we’ve put together a list of a few up-and-coming comedy names and troupes to follow.

*Of course there’s the Bondi Hipsters, but if you hadn’t heard of them already you’re not even reading this part which makes us wonder, why and who are we even writing this bit for? To that we say, fuck you.

1. The Birthday Boys

You may have heard us mention these lads before. But their second season – featuring Odenkirk, Ben Stiller and more celebrities than Lindsay Lohan’s sex list – has just returned it’s funny. These guys are off-beat, out-there but if you watch close enough you’ll see unlike this post, every sketch has a point or not one at all.

Here’s the latest teaser – having a crack at Hollywood reboots

And here’s a personal favourite. If you’ve ever seen an ESPN 30 for 30 or pretty much any sports doco, you’ll see just how ridiculous this is…

2. Garfunkel & Oats

Their name suggests one of two things – they’re either old Jewish men into pop-folk or a new cat-dog duo taking on the countryside all by themselves. Interesting fact? They’re neither. They’re actually two zany babes whose music-inspired comedy has seen them go from Upright Citizens Brigade (UCB) Alumni to YouTube sensations to their own show on IFC – same #channel as The Birthday Boys.

3. Broad City

About to start their second season, these girls are the NSFW version of Garfunkel & Oats who replace the musical instruments with bongs. If Girls is about NYC’s rich and spoilt brats, Broad City is about the rest of us trying to make it in a breakneck town. And better yet, it also stars Hannibal Buress – a very funny dude who recently got serious and tore shreds off BIll Cosby over pedophilia accusations.

4. Jerrod Carmichael

You might remember him from Bad Neighours with Seth Rogen and Zac Efron, but he won’t be a supporting player much longer. Jerrod’s also one the mind’s behind Tyler the Creator and Odd Future’s Adult Swim show Loiter Squad and most recently found an ingenious way to promote his new special on HBO. See below.

And just this week, NBC ordered an original pilot him and director Nick Stoller, the guy behind such films as Forgetting Sarah Marshall and Get Him to The Greek.

Laugh hard, friends.
