The Radiohead frontman has better things to do.
After it was announced last month that British art-rockers Radiohead would be getting inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame, many fans were left wondering whether anyone from the group, who have a long history of voicing disdain towards the industry, would even show up. And now we have Thom Yorke’s definitive answer.
In an interview with Variety’s Chris William, Yorke has stated he simply doesn’t “get” awards ceremonies. “…we’ve always been very blasé about that stuff. So we don’t want to offend anyone. We just think that we just don’t quite understand it. We’ve had it explained to us, so it’s cool. But we don’t really understand it as English people,” Yorke says.
“I think our problem is essentially that every awards ceremony in the UK stinks. We grew up with the Brits, which is like this sort of drunken car crash that you don’t want to get involved with. [Chuckles.] So, yeah, we don’t really know what to make of it.”
When asked straight up by William if he’d be attending, the answer was a straight up “no”. “I can’t. I know I can’t, because of these piano pieces that I’ve written. There’s the Paris Philharmonic, so I have to be there for that… I’m booked,” he said.
The pieces he is referring to is a piano piece written for French pianists Katia and Marielle Labèque which will debut on the 7th of April at Philharmonie De Paris, which is nine days after the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame Induction in New York, so it’s safe to say if he really wanted to be there he probably could.
