If you come from a country town in Australia you’ll be well aware of the way people’s lives intertwine through gossip, observations, and rumours. It’s a strange connectedness that you don’t really get in the big cities, and it’s what Luke Spook is examining on his latest single – and forthcoming album title track – ‘Small Town’.
Musically, the song is reminiscent of Village Green-era Kinks mixed with the kookier elements of the Beatles’ Magical Mystery Tour, with Spook displaying a masterful knack for capturing the warmth and weirdness of the 60s. Craftily incorporating horns, kazoos, sitars, and cowbells, it’s set a high bar for what’s to come on the record, which is due out via Third Eye Stimuli in October.
The clip is hands down our favourite of the year so far. Lifting the lid on a miniature town constructed entirely out of recycled and used materials by Spook himself, the grainy footage and vintage feel transports us back to our days sitting in front of the TV watching British Children’s shows like Postman Pat, Thomas The Tank Engine, and Fireman Sam.

“I thought the only way to magnify the goldfish bowl world of a small town would be to build a town myself and use models to illustrate the lyrics in my song. I built the whole thing relying only on online model train tutorials and a very small budget. Countless hours were spent setting up the right shots, pulling strings and placing tiny plastic cows”, Spook explains.
