If you’ve been keeping your ear to the ground of Sydney’s live music scene lately, you’ll have been hearing the name Aislinn Young tossed around. Over the past year or so, her country-flavoured take on folk-rock, backed by her flawless delivery, has been captivating audiences in bars all over town. Drawing listeners in with sugary melodies before she and her band – psych outfit Narla – them on a fuzzy ride of riffs and wailing when they least expect it.
Today we have her sophomore single ‘Heavy Sound’, a study on Young’s journey to a state of emotional and mental peace. Complete with vocals by Jack Millar, the tune feels like it could easily slide into Neil Young’s On The Beach, or Fleetwood Mac’s Rumours, which is not the kind of compliment we splash around lightly.
“Writing ‘Heavy Sound’ offered a place for me to focus on pulling myself out of a state of mental chaos. I guess in short writing this song reflects a focus of self-preservation, an appreciation of love, and a feeling of steadiness,” Young says.
Recorded in Millar’s shed, the track embodies the raw one-take mentality of the 60s and 70s, with Young proving her hand as a multi-instrumentalist. Here, capturing the energy of the track and the emotion of the moment was more important than that polished studio sound. Having listened to it non-stop since we got our mitts on it, we’d have to agree.
“We laid down the drums and rhythm guitar first – me on drums, Jack on guitar. From there, I overdubbed the lead parts and vocals, with Jack overdubbing bass and harmonies,” Young says. We hadn’t actually planned for me to play drums on the track, which was really fun. It was really exciting recording with such spontaneity.”
