No doubt performing on The Voice is terrifying to say the least, singing to the backs of four chairs an unusual concept that would intimidate even the most veteran of performers. Even more intimidating however would be to perform your own original song for it, baring your artistic identity while trying to inspire a world-renowned artist and coach to turn their chair for you.
But 18-year-old Siala Robson made it look effortless, blessing the stage with her original song ‘Other Than You’, and garnering a four chair turn as a result.
“For me, you’re the most completely professional thing I’ve ever seen in a Blind”, said British megastar Boy George said. “I love the anger of it and the punk of it, I found it utterly believable.”
The track is on a completely other-worldly level of emotion, with Siala pointing to her rough past as to her inspiration for the anger and rawness, with Siala saying “I was raised by my single mum and I’m the eldest of six. Me and my family ended up in the women’s refuge over abuse. From a young age I was, like, always having to physically stick up for my mum and try and defend her.”
Pretty crazy beginnings, and you can hear all of it in her music and more, being equally as cathartic for Siala and the listener “I let it all out and deal with the present moment. That anger you hear in the music stems from that, but in a really positive way.”
It’s safe to say she’s gonna go far in the competition, let’s just hope she drops more original bangers along the way…
