After the biggest year of her career, G Flip is taking time to enjoy her success, whilst cultivating big plans for the future.

Taking out four spots in the Hottest 100, including sixth position, playing Australia’s biggest festivals and amassing millions of streams – it’s fair to say that G Flip is one of the country’s biggest acts right now. Her ability to seemingly effortlessly produce indie-pop anthems is unmatched in the Aus music ecosystem at the moment, so naturally we were happy to catch up with her for a little chat.

First up, how did it feel to have such huge success in the Hottest 100?

Well, yeah, it was crazy. I guess my whole life I’ve been listening to triple j, and every year I’d listen to the Hottest 100 since I was little. It was amazing to hear four songs pop up, as well as the year before, it was crazy getting my first songs in it. I remember just crying my eyes out. Having four songs in and getting number six, it was mental. It was like, I couldn’t believe it.

I’m still in shock about it. And it’s one of my best memories and one of the highlights of my career, for sure. I was very lucky and I have such supportive fans to vote for my tunes to get in it. So yeah, I’m still in shock about it. It is the coolest thing ever.

How do you deal with that kind of success? Is there any pressure for you going forward?

I’m pretty laid back about everything. I think I stress a lot, which people don’t really see. Behind closed doors, I tend to stress. I’m a bit of a control freak, and I’m very, I don’t know, I have my hands on everything that I do, and I’m very involved with everything from artwork to the music, to me playing the instruments, to putting my whole show together. I’m super involved. So I guess there are pressures that come with that which get stressful and I have to use my time wisely and time management and stay on top of my routine and keep healthy, et cetera.

Are you more equally as focussed on output and streaming numbers?

No, I’m not focused on output and streaming numbers. Of course having a popular song gets you a lot of streams, but also how well your song fits within playlists is how you get lots of streams. So, you know, there are heaps of songs out there that are like the best song ever, but they might not fit in getting as many playlists. So I’m definitely not focused on the streaming numbers. I actually wouldn’t have any idea what numbers I have right now.

You’re one of the most recognisable faces in the Aus music industry. Does that affect how you live your day-to-day life?

No, it doesn’t affect me. I feel like people stare at me on the street a little bit, and people will come say hey, but I love it. I’ve always been a chatty person anyway. So it doesn’t, it doesn’t affect me. I would be like the person that strikes up a conversation on the train and just be like, ‘hey’ to a random. So when randoms come up and chat, I’m totally cool with it. And you know, I just like meeting peopleWhat’s on your iso playlist?

I’ve been listening to Grady, Healey, Boy & Bear, Remi Wolf, Shelfy, Peach Tree Rascals, Talheims, Power Fu, yeah. There’s some of it, what I’m listening to at the moment, a little Spotify playlist I’ve got going. It’s kind of like laid-back chill, low-fire pop/rap kind of vibe. I’m into that.

What are your ambitions as a songwriter? Would you like to write music for other people?

I’ve big ambitions as a songwriter. I’ve been focusing a lot of my time recently on writing for other people and, you know, writing for other artists and for other projects. It’s a big passion of mine and I’ve been focusing a lot of my energy on that. And yeah, I have dreams to write and be involved with some of the biggest records in the world.

I want to work in rooms with big artists and just be behind the scenes. I want to do more work behind the scenes, producing for other artists, and writing for other artists. Definitely. So hells yeah, I want to write music for other people.

‘Hyperfine’ is one of the most nicely-crafted songs we’ve heard this year. How many of those do you have waiting to be unleashed?

I think that’s why I’ve got more time to write songs for other people now. I’ve got, you know, a batch of tracks that are kind of ready to go in my hard drive, and yeah, there’s a few to drop this year and I’ve got a hit waiting.

Is touring overseas a top priority for you, or would you prefer to capitalise on your success here?

Definitely. I think I’ve done a lot in Australia and now I want to focus some energy on getting myself overseas. It would be a massive goal of mine to play similar to the shows I’m playing here. I’d love to play similar size shows overseas and play festivals overseas. And that’s definitely something that I would love to tick off the list.

You’re a Collingwood supporter. Are you stoked that AFL is coming back?

Fuck, yeah, I’m excited. And I can’t wait for next Thursday, Richmond-Collingwood game. It’s going to be great. I’ve really missed footy. I’ve even gone back and watched some old games just to keep me sane. It’s something I look forward to every week when the season is on so I can not wait for it to come back.

Tell us why you’re so into Russell Athletic’s Eagle R Range?

Yeah, this new Eagle R range is so fucking cool, and the colours are sick. There’s this sick green color, I’m actually wearing the cactus hoody right now. There’s a sick gray color called storm. There’s a sick pink color called orchid. They’re super comfy clothing. I think with me, my whole life, I guess, style you could say is laid back and chill, and just what feels comfy. I wake up in the morning and I just wear what I’m going to be comfy in – that’s definitely what this range is all about and whaRussell Athletics is. It’s just super comfy. The hoodies feel like a hug from your grandma.

I’m really into it. And I’m not just saying that because I’m partnered with Russell Athletic. Like I genuinely really like these clothes and I wear them and I just think they’re rad. And they look cool.
