Words by Amar Gera //
Have you ever felt so much emotion that you just couldn’t put it into words? That no matter what you did, there was just no way to express the waves of feeling deep within your soul? Thomas Marland of Sydney-based EDM outfit The Nights has, and he’s managed to bottle that state of being into a four-minute euphoria-infused soundscape in ‘Woman’. Recently having the honour of becoming a father (congrats mate!), The Nights’ new tune is the result of Marland’s deep love and admiration for his wife & all women, and the result is incredible to say the least.
The track takes it slow and steady, starting with just a mellow kick and pulsating synth, before building upon itself with distorted vocals and a mesmerising keys line (I for one cannot wait to see the live visuals The Nights cook up for this beauty). The tune goes through several states of being, with various inflections and colours peppered throughout, but it always stays true to its roots. You can literally feel Marland’s love for his wife radiating off of the track, filling you to the brim with pure stardust. Speaking on its emotional scope, Marland states “Musically speaking, ‘Woman’ accurately represents my emotional intention – influenced by a deep sense of love and respect for my wife and women in general, with a boding sense of sleep-deprived dreamy euphoria, joy and empowerment.”
It’s clear that the Sydney groove-shamans have got the gift, and they’ve definitely been putting it to good use. From winning RÜFÜS DU SOL’s remix competition to playing everything from Yours & Owls and Burning Man (all while picking up mad praise from their contemporaries along the way), the three-piece are truly taking their destiny into their own hands.
I mean, what more do you need to know? If the word ‘pure’ had a signature song, it’d pale in comparison to ‘Woman’. Be sure to follow the group on Facebook and Instagram to keep up with all things The Nights. We have a feeling they’re going to shake things up in a major way, and it’d be a crime to not get onboard now…
