Number one mens tennis player Novak Djokovic has announced that his wife and him have tested positive for COVID-19, following travelling to Croatia to take part in a tennis tournament. Along with the world number one, Croatia’s Borna Coric, Bulgaria’s Grigor Dimitrov and Viktor Troicki from Serbia have all tested positive after attending the tournament as well.
In a statement posted to his social medias and personal website, the tennis star said “Hi everyone – We’re back in Belgrade and I’ve tested positive for COVID-19 as well as Jelena. The kids have tested negative. We will remain in self-isolation for the next 14 days.”
“I am so deeply sorry out tournament has caused harm. Everything the organisers and I did the past month, we did with a pure heart and sincere intentions. We believed the tournament met all health protocols and the health of our region seemed in good condition to finally unite people for philanthropic reasons. We were wrong and it was too soon.”
The Serbian star also announced that the rest of the tournament has been cancelled, urging anyone who had attended the tournament or been around attendees to get tested and practice social distancing. Check out his full statement below.
