After Disclosure wrap up, it’s time for the big one. The major drawcard of Stereosonic (for me at least) arrives as RL Grime takes the stage. Shit is getting real weird but in the best way possible, as a giant green sad face appears on the screens. So many feels. RL Grime wastes no time delving into the bangers – ‘No Flex Zone’, ‘CoCo’ & ‘A Milli’ all get a whirl, as well as his own huge remix of Chief Keef’s drill hit ‘Love Sosa’. The likes of hyperactive anthem ‘Core’ make you want to punch somebody in the face and maybe apologise after, but RL Grime really blows my mind when he mashes ILoveMakonnen’s ‘Tuesday’ into A-Trak’s aforementioned remix of ‘Heads Will Roll’ – as well as the vocal sample that Flux Pavilion used in ‘I Can’t Stop’ wedged somewhere in between. Big vibes, also RL Grime drops a couple of Drake tracks which is always welcome.
Next up, Diplo takes the stage – and whether it’s as a solo act or alongside our pal Jillionaire as Major Lazer, the Mad Decent head honcho never disappoints. He proved this at Stereosonic back in 2012, and he’s here to do it again tonight. Earlier in the afternoon, his huge headline show with What So Not & Crookers got announced – and with that news in mind, we’re ready for Diplo’s set to be followed by what might be 2014’s biggest club show.
Diplo dropping DJ Khaled in a set is always a good idea, as is Jay Z, Kendrick Lamar and Diplo’s latest side-project, Jack U. As is the standard for Major Lazer shows, Diplo tells everyone to take their shirt off and swing it above their heads in a carefree manner. Luckily, we are at Stereosonic and most of the punters have already been doing this for the last 36 hours. He also gets a sizeable collection of women onstage to begin twerking, and that is pretty great. After that, we are pooped and decide to go home (via McDonalds drive-thru) seeing as we are responsible and it’s a Sunday night.
All in all, Stereosonic proves that they can keep the good times rolling with a myriad of stages catered to every fan of electronic music under the sun. My only complaint is that damn pizza, but they made for that with free candy. Shoutout to the young lords over at Red Frog. Good vibes over the whole weekend, would rave again/seven thumbs up.
