Get your magnifying glass and trench coat ready, Netflix has announced its rebooting the classic Unsolved Mysteries tv show and dropped an accompanying trailer. The series was known for its documenting of various cold cases and paranormal occurrences, having a 10-year-run on NBC before moving to CBS, Lifetime, and ending at Spike TV in 2010. Now, Netflix is rebooting the beloved classic, as well as bringing back original show creators Terry Dunn Meurer and John Cosgrove for the revival.
The synopsis for the new series has us keen af, reading “The iconic series Unsolved Mysteries is back! Fusing signature elements from the original series with contemporary immersive, character-driven storytelling, the 12 new episodes are rooted in the experiences of ordinary people who have lived the unthinkable — from the trauma of a loved one’s unexplained disappearance or horrific death, to the shock of a bizarre paranormal encounter. Alongside detectives and journalists, family members offer clues, present theories, and identify suspects, hoping one viewer holds the key to solving the mystery.”
The second coming of the show is remaining loyal to the original in numerous other aspects as well, retaining the same title music and types of cases documented. However, instead of including four cases per episode like the original series, the new series will focus on a single case each episode that is “produced, directed, photographed, scored and edited at a high level.” Explaining the decision, executive producer Shawn Levy stated that “We at 21 Laps — along with our partners at Cosgrove/Meurer Productions — made an early decision to have our storytelling dive deeper and establish a more intimate connection with the audience. To do that, you need time.”
No doubt this sounds very promising. The first instalment of the 12 episode season will premiere on Netflix on July 1. Check out the trailer below.
