It’s more than fair to say that Michael Jordan’s docu-series The Last Dance was just a bit controversial, making numerous claims about players while portraying others less than favourably throughout it’s ten episodes. Now, perhaps one of the most important figures of interest in the series (besides MJ himself) Scott Pippen, has opened up on his portrayal as well as his relationship with MJ.
Specifically, the Emmy-nominated series covered the highs and lows of the Bulls’ dynasty as well as MJ’s last season, while touching on Scottie Pippen’s contract troubles and his being underpaid. Not to mention, it kind’ve portrayed him as just MJ’s sidekick (which he was definitely much more than).
Speaking out on the portrayal that he had been reportedly “livid” at, Pippen said “Why would I be offended by anything that happened 30 years ago?” Pippen said in an interview. “It didn’t bother me at all. It was an opportunity for our younger generation that hadn’t seen or knew anything about basketball in the ‘90s.”
It’s good to hear that Scottie isn’t jaded by his portrayal, but sadly that isn’t shared by his teammates, with other Bulls alumni like Horace Grant taking issue with their portrayals.
“Lie, lie, lie. … If MJ had a grudge with me, let’s settle this like men,” Grant said back in May. “Yet and still, he goes out and puts this lie out that I was the source behind the book… It’s only a grudge, man. I’m telling you, it was only a grudge. And I think he proved that during this so-called documentary. When if you say something about him, he’s going to cut you off, he’s going to try to destroy your character.” To give you context, Jordan straight up accuses Grant of being the snitch who leaked info to Sam Smith for the controversial Jordan Rules book.
We’re sure more players will continue to comment on the series as well as their relationship with MJ, but it’s definitely good to hear that there’s no bad blood with Scottie and MJ, one of the greatest partnerships in Bulls and NBA history…
