All water under the bridge…

It’s been a quarter of a century since the release of iconic comedy Tommy Boy, starring the likes of a young David Spade, Chris Farley and Rob Lowe. The film was responsible for countless quotes, and watches just as well all these years later. Appearing on Lowe’s new podcast Literally! With Rob Lowe recently, Spade reflected on his own experience filming the iconic comedy, as well as a pretty huge fight he got into with co-star Chris Farley.

Ironically, the fight between Spade and Farley was actually about Rob Lowe. To break it down, Farley and Spade were spending every minute of every day with each other while filming Tommy Boy, flying into the Toronto set from New York together for weeks at a time. The pair unable to get time off from their slots at Saturday Night Live, thus, they were grinding their little hearts out during production of the film.

Speaking on the time, Spade said “we were all burned out. We were both fu*king dying. It’s like an old married couple; we’re fu*king fighting all the time. We were never apart.”

Then, one night they arrived in Toronto at around 1am for a 6am shoot (yikes!), with Farley telling Spade he was “feeling sick” and was going to “go and crash”. Spade, who felt in top shape, linked up with Rob Lowe, meeting him for a drink at the hotel bar. Speaking on the move, Spade said “We don’t tell Farley. Because of course we don’t. We see him every godf*cking day”.

However, the next day when Spade got to set, Farley was just a bit hurt by the whole situation, with Farley staring at him and asking “How was your night? How was Rob Lowe?” before repeated himself and asking “How’s your precious f*cking Rob Lowe?”

“I don’t know,” Spade replied.
“How was drinks last night,” Farley countered.
“Oh, is that what we’re getting at?” Spade asked. “It was fine. It was all right.”
“So, you call f*cking Rob Lowe, so you can have a little date with him, but you don’t call me?”
“The last word off the wire was that you were sick.”
“So you called Rob Lowe?”

Sounds pretty intense, and it didn’t blow over quickly, with Farley at one point coming over to Spade while on set and standing on his hand “with his big f*cing boots, with all his thousands of pounds.” Spade then threw a Diet Coke at him in response and then Farley pushed him down a flight of stairs. When Spade reached the bottom, “I stand up and say, ‘Are we in a fight?’ And the director says on the walkie-talkie, ‘Action!’ and we just stare at each other, and we turn and we walk in.”

Tensions kept building on set, with Spade at one point walking off in a fury, while Farley literally tackled a crew member because he was so angry. Eventually, the pair made up and remained friends, and the movie came out fantastic. Reflecting on the experience, Spade said “Look, we had a blast. All my memories of Tommy Boy were fun. It was stressful. It was hard. You wish you could enjoy how much the movie will be remembered at the time. But Tommy Boy, I hear about more than any other movie … We had greats seats for Farley, so I love it. I’m just glad to be a part of something.”

It’s very cool to hear the pair made up, but damn, if there’s anything to take away from this story, it’s that Farley literally has zero chill. Check the podcast below to hear Spade tell the story himself, the Farley story starts around the 33 minute mark.
