In news that is set to bum Aussie users out just a bit, Netflix has announced it’s increasing the prices for its basic and standard plans. The increase is the first time the streaming service has adjusted price since 2017, when the Australian government’s tax changes included charging GST on digital goods.
If you’ve already got a Netflix account, expect to see the price increase come into effect in the next few weeks, while new subscribers will see the updated prices as soon as they sign up. To break it down, the basic plan will be going from $9.99 to $10.99, while the standard plan will go up from $13.99 to $15.99. Premium plans will be unaffected, remaining at $19.99.
A basic plan includes one simultaneous stream and standard def. picture quality, while a standard plan includes two simultaneous streams, high def. picture quality and two devices on to which content can be downloaded. Premium includes four simultaneous streams, four download devices and ultra high definition (4K) quality.
Speaking on the increase, Netflix issued a statement saying “We know Australians have never had more choices when it comes to entertainment, and we’re more committed than ever to delivering an experience that exceeds their expectations. Members tell us how much they value the breadth and variety of the catalogue, and we’re updating our prices so that we can continue to invest in more shows and films.”
“As always, there will be different plans so that people can pick a price that works for their budget.”
I guess if we’re going to get more variety in titles and higher quality shows, then the price increase will surely be worth it. Here’s hoping we get our money’s worth when these new prices come into effect…
