After much of his signature teasing, musical legend Paul McCartney has dropped the trailer for his upcoming album McCartney III, and it’s totally badass.
The 45-second clip is a muso’s dream, following McCartney in the studio as he demonstrates his musical prowess with sublime ease. Featuring various cuts of him playing drums, acoustic & electric guitar, piano, clarinet, mandolin (we’re actually not sure about that last one) and probably plenty more instruments, the trailer is just an aggressive reminder of the compositional genius that the Beatles legend is.
And of course, McCartney’s musical fingerprints are all over the new record, having produced, written, recorded and performed all of it himself. Sounds like a lot right? Well, it is, but with life in lockdown significantly clearing his schedule, it seems the process was way more chill for Paul this time around.
“I was living lockdown life on my farm with my family and I would go to my studio every day,” McCartney said. “I had to do a little bit of work on some film music and that turned into the opening track. And then when it was done, I thought, ‘What will I do next?’ I had some stuff I’d worked on over the years, but sometimes time would run out and it would be left half-finished. So I started thinking about what I had.”
“Each day I’d start recording with the instrument I wrote the song on and then gradually layer it all up; it was a lot of fun,” he also added. “It was about making music for yourself rather than making music that has to do a job. So, I just did stuff I fancied doing. I had no idea this would end up as an album.”
The new album will be McCartney’s 18th album, and is set to be released on December 11th via Capitol Records. Check the full trailer below.
