If you’ve at all had to rough it out in quarantine or self-isolation over the past year, odds are you’re gonna relate hard to Slowthai & A$AP Rocky’s new video for ‘MAZZA’. Filmed in their respective home countries and directed over Zoom, the two hip hop titans explore all the claustrophobia of isolation and its debilitating effects on the mind, and honestly it tripped me TF out upon first viewing.
The visual makes great use of visual effects and frenzied camera angles to make the viewer feel like they’re in a completely surrealist world, following Rock and Slowthai around their respective hotel rooms as they start to slowly lose their minds. Their paths diverge midway through however, as Slowthai begins having mad hallucinations and is forced to expel large amounts of energy, while Rocky imagines himself as a white person while watching TV.
‘MAZZA’ is the latest single from Slowthai’s upcoming album titled Tyron, which is set to drop February 5. So far he’s dropped videos for ‘NHS’ and ‘Feel Away’, along with his meditative visual for ‘Thoughts’ that saw him take it back to the old days for a good old fashioned grime freestyle. Other artists set to appear on the project include Skepta, Denzel Curry, Dominic Fike and Deb Never.
Safe to say we’re keen AF. For now, check out the video for ‘MAZZA’ below.
