2011 us are losing our minds…

We all remember where we were when Rebecca Black’s hit ‘Friday’ was released into the world in 2011, the auto-tuned teen bop one of the first songs to properly be memed and taken the piss out of for its repetitive lyrics and cheesy AF video. Sadly, the moment also showed the power of trolls, as millions upon millions of keyboard warriors subsequently attacked a then 13-year-old Black and essentially made her life a living hell.

Don’t get me wrong, the song wasn’t great, but Black by no means deserved the amount of hate she got. It forced her to go under the radar for several years and drop music altogether to try and escape the black hole of hate the song had created. But ten years later, she’s back in full force, and she’s giving a giant middle finger to the haters with a hyper-pop remix of the tune.

Linking up with Dorian Electra, Big Freedia and 3OH!3 (with production from Dylan Brady of 100 Gets), the song sees her get glitchy beyond belief as she transforms the original tune into a hard AF banger with crushing drums, even more auto-tuned vocals and atmospheric synths. There’s also a killer breakdown and verse from rapper Big Freedia at around 2 minutes in that’s honestly straight fire.

The accompanying video for the tune sees her fully embrace the various elements of the original, however elevating it up through a cyberpunk lens that honestly probably wouldn’t have gone down well in 2011, but now, is sure to garner critical acclaim from the hyper-pop fandom.

Check out the OG 2011 vid and the new remix below to see which you prefer (hint: It’s gonna be the 2021 version).
