The endless scrolling stops at Gone Girl tonight. *Spoilers ahead*

Do you find that you spend nearly as much time deciding what to watch as you do actually watching things? Sometimes, you just need someone to make the call for you, which is why I have graciously written the following words down. There’s no need to scroll, there’s no umming and ahhing, the executive decision has been made.

Tonight, you’ll be watching David Fincher’s 2014 film (which was based on Gillian Flynn’s 2012 novel) Gone Girl. The story follows Nick Dunne (Ben Affleck), a kinda boring bar owner, whose wife Amy (Rosamund Pike) goes missing on their fifth wedding anniversary. Nick is naturally the number one suspect and, as we concurrently hear disturbing flashbacks narrated by Amy, we start to see that not all is right in their marriage….

Before you say “but I’ve already seen it” or “I can’t cop Ben Affleck” read the below:

It’s Rosie’s show.

Rosamund Pike is so good as Amy. So good that she was nominated for an Academy Award. So good that Amazon Prime have just released a new movie of her pretty much playing the same character. It’s called I Care A Lot and I do not care for it at all. You might as well just watch Gone Girl again. Seriously.

Fincher brings a gritty nihilism to the film.

Would you expect anything less from the guy who gave us Se7en, Fight Club and Zodiac? Probably not. But just think how this movie without Fincher’s trademark gloominess and blue/green colour grade could have been. Like, imagine if it was handed over to the Coen Brothers or Baz Lurhman, it would have been a vastly different and (most likely) terrible film. Only Fincher is dark enough to perfectly ride that psychologically bleak train.

The ‘Almost Famous’ guy, is almost funny.

Combatting Fincher’s cold tones is the guy from Almost Famous, Patrick Fugit, who plays a uniformed cop working Amy’s case. Though he still looks like he’s 15, he does deliver a few lines that make the whole thing not seem as bleak and offer a nice bit of balance to the film. It’s always nice to see a child star get some adult roles and break the mould a bit.

Neil Patrick Harris gets what he deserves.

Well, maybe death is not exactly what he deserves, but it’s super satisfying to see this creepy little S.O.B get sliced up and even more satisfying to see Amy think (and murder) her way out of a jam. Probably the best part of the movie, even better than the midway twist/reveal.

It makes you question every relationship you’ve ever been in.

Maybe this isn’t a great reason to watch, but my god, it certainly makes you look at the person you’re lying down next to, right? Always remember the moral of the story: never sleep with Em Rata…
