Today ARIA winners and overall Sydney favourites Flight Facilities (made up of Hugo Gruzman and Jimmy Lyell) have put out their first new track in over a year, teaming up with LA rapper Channel Tres for their latest tune ‘Lights Up.’
The track sees the veteran producers get their groove on with basslines and percussive arrangement, crafting a super precise soundscape for the LA superstar to go ham on. They make sure to play with various instruments as well though, including some super jazzy piano-chords that make an appearance every second to third phrase, having just the right amount of waviness to compliment Tres’ laid back delivery. The outro of the tune also throws it back to the glory days of disco, with the introduction of hype building strings building anticipation for the grand finale as Channel continues to fire on all cylinders in the vocal realm.
Speaking on the inspiration behind the tune, the duo explain “We’ve always loved the sound of the early Detroit House scene that crossed over with the Paradise Garage era. Combined with our love for Channel’s voice, it seemed like a perfect fit. His voice has a magical ability to make songs that are made for strutting.
“We felt it was important to keep enough of our sound and influence in the track, to avoid it sounding too derivative, so we wanted to include some 90s and 00s elements to give the song its own character.”
