Melbourne singer-songwriter Jiordy is back cleansing our souls with her tender new single ‘Hard To Say,’ the first taste of her upcoming EP A Sprig Of Wattle imbued with lush ethereality.
The new offering (co-written and produced by Liam Brown) sees her swap out the electro beats and vivid soundscapes of recent releases like ‘Vigor,’ ‘Ur Dumb’ and ‘Weight in Water’, opting for an acoustic ballad that’s totally soothing and heartfelt. Beginning with a bare piano line and the songstress’ gentle vocals, the track mirrors a slow burning candle in the wind, the instrumental arrangement and vocal utterances acting as an enduring flame that burns bright and honest.
Singing about inner growth and reflecting on one’s past, you get a sense of the overall wisdom that Jiordy has cultivated over the years, the measured vocal delivery of the hook in ‘got me feeling some kind of way’ tempered with acceptance as she comes to terms with all of the trial and error of her 20s; along with the hardship that resulted from it. It’s all pretty well summed up at around 2:15 when all of the instrumental layers gently collide, coming to a wish-filled crescendo as she confesses how she tried to ‘run away’ and ‘push it all back,’ the serene harmonies sparkling with warmth and clarity.
Speaking on the new tune, Jiordy explains the themes of reflection and growth that permeate its construction, explaining “Being in your 20’s is a time of intense growth and learning, and this track is a reflection of those formative adult years and the trial and error that comes with navigating and asserting my place in the world.
“It’s not until I can write about something that I can process it and truly let it go, and that’s what ‘Hard To Say’ is for me. When I feel brave enough to sort through my past, I end up writing it in my music or lyrics. That’s my way of moving on.”
A pretty tender offering to say the least, we’re definitely keen for A Sprig Of Wattle when it drops in August.
