While being hot off the heels of her new web series…

Eclectic rocker Ruby Fields is making waves this Wednesday morning, releasing her latest single ‘Song About A Boy’ with an accompanying music video, along with the announcement of her long-awaited debut album Been Doin’ It For A Bit.

Following on from triple j favourites ‘R.E.G.O.’ and ‘Pretty Grim,’ ‘Song About A Boy’ sees the Cronulla-born rocker dig into a past relationship and being “caught up in someone that’s not right for you.” The tune’s lyrical and musical arrangement really drives home the emotion behind it, the gentle guitar plucking in the verses contrasted by the aggressive strums that rev into overdrive mayhem; setting a vivid scene as Ruby recounts the highs and lows of a failed relationship.

The video is a literal representation of the track’s storyline, following a young couple as they attempt to outrun the ghosts of their pasts which seem to always catch up with them. It’s shot in this sun-kissed fashion that calls out to the beauty of the natural world while giving a darker, more gritty portrayal of the classic Bonnie and Clyde story; embodied in the chase sequence through a farm field, exes of the couple standing resolute as they eerily watch them trying to escape.

With the new guitar-heavy thumper and visual comes news fans have been waiting for, the rock starlet announcing her debut album Been Doin It For A Bit, which is set to land September 24th. Describing the body of work as a “celebration of where she is at in life,” the new release is the result of large amounts of reflection and hard work, with Ruby explaining “Since I was 17 I’ve been doing the Ruby Fields thing, but I gave myself a break last year to finally come to terms with who I am as a person.

“I’m not sure I’ve taken the time to reflect on that after high school.“Making mistakes is part of life, but in 2020 my self-worth wasn’t validated by who I was onstage. So I’ve been working on being a better friend, partner, bandmate; just a better person.”

And it appears she isn’t stopping there, recently launching her new web series titled Fred’s Shed, which sees her engage in some wholesome chats with guests while building guitars with them (more news on those guests to come). To be honest after her guest hosting gig on triple j breakfast a couple years back and her hilarious stint as an interviewer at Laneway Brisbane in 2019, we’ve been waiting for her to launch something like this, and her incorporation of her longtime love of guitar making is the perfect way to bring it all together.

Definitely a big day for the ‘Song About A Boy’ singer. Be sure to pre-order the new album here to be the first to get your hands on it when it drops on September 24th. By pre-ordering, you’ll also get the opportunity to win a guitar built by Ruby herself, which is by far the best incentive we’ve seen for pre-ordering an album in recent memory.

For now, check out the pilot episode for Fred’s Shed below and be sure to buy/stream ‘Song About A Boy’ here.
