In the months since DONDA began its glacial album rollout, there’s been more buzz about its surrounding fanfare- from tentative album covers to sold-out listening parties– than any actual, definitive news about its musical content or release.
Adding three more detours on the road to DONDA, Kanye’s pre-album hijinx have escalated with rapid fire, as the rapper has somehow managed to reignite a years-old beef with Drake, legally file for a name change, and build an in-stadium replica of his childhood home; all within the space of a few days.
In a move that absolutely no one asked him to pursue, West has filed to have his name formally changed from Kanye to Ye. While the legal mononym makes sense (Kanye once asked fans to only refer to him as the nickname) there’s a few different titles that feel equally suitable at this point; edgelord and hurry-the-fuck-up-dude among them. In any case, the filing seems like unnecessary paperwork during what is reported to be ‘DONDA’s official release week.

Other distractions have arisen in the form of Drake, after the Canadian rapper reignited his beef with soon-to-be ‘Ye’ during a featured verse on Trippie Redd’s new album, Trip At Knight. On ‘Betrayal,’ Drake trades barbs with the lyric “all these fools I’m beefin’ that I barely know/ Ye ain’t changin’ shit for me, it’s set in stone.” In response, West posted-then-deleted meme-worthy screenshots of an eight-person group chat, complete with Joaquin Phoenix cameos and a pin-drop of Drake’s home address (see below).
Elsewhere, in what is probably the only news relevant to an actual album, Kanye has begun recreating his childhood home, with a replica of the big blue house being built centre-stage in Soldier Field Stadium. The construction comes ahead of Kanye’s third and final ‘DONDA’ listening party this Thursday, after which the album is expected to finally drop sometime next week.
