In what’s the last Homegrown Fire for 2021, we’re leaving you with plenty of heat…

Well, 2021 has been a ride! It’s been a crazy time, and even though things are still pretty cooked, we’d be remiss if we didnt say that these weekly track reviews have been an absolute joy to bring you, and you best believe we’re going to be stepping it up a notch in the new year.

But enough of the soppy stuff, five fire tracks for the last time in 2021, coming right up.

Sydney Yungins ft. A.GIRL (Sydney/Eora) – ‘Ride or Die’

Sydney Yungins give us plenty of soul and flavour on their latest offering ‘Ride or Die,’ the Eora trio up with fellow hip hop OG A.GIRL for an overflow of breeze and funk.

The track sees the two artists take us all the way back to the golden age of 90s hip hop, Jodeci-reminiscent synths and basslines circling in a chasm of mood. It’s definitely a super easy listen listen, once made easier by Sydney Yungin’s hard-hitting bars about loyalty and street hustle. A.GIRL’s hook is the secret sauce that ties it all together, her utterance ‘Ride or Die’ driving home the importance of sticking by your day ones and keeping it 100.

To put things briefly, if you ever find yourself in a stretch hummer with a sunroof, we implore you to play this badboy on full blast. You won’t regret it.

Sugyann (Melbourne/Naarm) – ‘Sublime’

Sugyann is a proper dark horse on his recent release ‘Sublime,’ the Nepalese-born producer serving up a housey banger that rivals the heaters played on the Coachella main stage.

The track makes use of soulful vocal samples that compel you to take notice, in addition to warbling horns and drums that fill you with anticipation. That is all before that mind-warping drop, the trap-infused insanity burning a hole in your brain. It’s definitely an ode to the baseline and future house genres alike, the tune striking a chord in the middle that’s sonically satisfying and electrifying.

Wanna find your next low key banger to play in the car with the homies, only for all of them to ask “What the fuck is that!?” Sugyann’s  ‘Sublime’ is more than ready for you.

MIZUKI (Melbourne/Naarm) – ‘How Far We’ve Come’

MIZUKI buzzes and floats around you with airy elixir on ‘How Far We’ve Come,’ the Naarm-based muso getting in her bedroom pop bag mad hard to make you feel all nice and cosy.

The track makes use of mellow guitar strums filled with pastel purples and magentas, swirling and compounding with minimal drum each drum hit. The hook sees an added breeze enter the mix with the addition of tender synths, all of which supporting and propelling MIZUKI’s vocals to be even more enchanting as she sings about self-discovery and fulfilment.

A track that’s perfect for your next night time drive, you can bet we’ll be bumping it hard. Give it a geez below.

Laces (Melbourne/Naarm) – ‘The Ridge’ (Trace Memory Reconstruct)

Laces is full of innovation and punchy rawness on his ‘The Ridge (Trace Memory Reconstruct),’ the local producer putting his sonic chops on full display for a five minute reimagining of his Field Fallacy Haptics hit.

Filled with bustling synths, drums and vocal samples that defy norm or convention, the producer fully immerses himself in the kaleidoscope of the electro expanse, shifting sporadically with diverse drum and melodic sections that turn your mind inside out. The drop at around 2:20 is aggressively intense as well, the young muso putting pedal to the metal as he mirrors pioneers like Flume and Skrillex.

Whether you like drum & bass, breakbeat, future-bass; the list goes on. ‘The Ridge’ has it all, and it’s all waiting to be dived into.

Sammi Constantine (Sydney/Eora) – ‘Lost My Mind’

Sammi Constantine continues to serve up thrills and gorgeous vibrations in her latest release ‘Lost My Mind,’ the Eora-based muso doubling down on the power pop sonic palette thats won her so much praise so early on in her career.

The track continues the brooding and larger than life sonics of her last single ‘The Show’ but through an even moodier lens, dark synths and drums amplifying the fire within her vocals. The hook sees her really embody the title lyric, each utterance of it compounding in resonance and emotion. Special shoutout to that music video as well, the visuals building upon the cinematic universe of ‘The Show’ through the cyberpunk

It just goes to show you the strength of the creative visions of our local artists. Dive into ‘Lost My Mind’ below.
