As the fantasy genre continues to dominate the big and small screen, it seems The Northman has found a way to set itself apart from its contemporaries…

Directed and co-written by Hollywood heavyweight Robert Eggers, the new epic follows a young Viking prince who’s hellbent on getting back at the bloke that killed his father. It’s a pretty riveting premise, and leading man Alexander Skarsgård gives a solid portrayal throughout the three minute teaser, getting up to all a matter of pillaging and beard-twirling; you know, regular Viking things.

Old made Eggers has pulled together quite the ensemble cast as well, with Aussie export Nicole Kidman, Ethan Hawke, Willem Dafoe, Anya Taylor-Joy, Björk and more all joining Skarsgård on his quest for revenge. It seems this is an especially dark Viking story, fights and battle sequences not holding back in terms of gore or rawness. There’s also a tonne of mythical elements in the trailer; mostly brought about by Willem Dafoe and Anya Taylor-Joy’s characters.
