Is this the beginning of the end?

Following a four year hiatus that saw them tour the world and start a new project with homegrown producer Golden Features, U.S. duo ODESZA are back with their first single since 2018.

Titled ‘The Last Goodbye’, the new offering samples acclaimed Detroit R&B singer Bettye LaVette’s 1965 single ‘Let Me Down Easy’ amongst fiery synths and drums, the Washington duo doubling down on the anthemic and euphoric cornerstones of their sound for a soul-infused heater. They also manage to sneak in a stank-face inducing bassline at around three minutes in that adds a further sense of grit to LaVette’s hook and the overall tune.

The official visualiser for the heater harkens back to ODESZA’s hallowed live show productions from over the years, gold lasers and light shows on full display over the six minute clip. It’s definitely eerily reminiscent of their historic Coachella set in 2018, the vast structures and lights acting as a full spectacle that enhances the immersion of the sonics.

Speaking on the concept of the new tune, the duo explain, “This song was born out of the concept of trying to bring these lasting, defining musical pieces like the 1965 release of ‘Let Me Down Easy’ by Bettye LaVette into a modern and contemporary electronic setting. The idea of bringing two worlds together, that at first seem distant, has always been something we’ve been drawn to.”

The title of the new single has also caused speculation that the duo’s upcoming album will be their last. It makes since if you think about it, considering that they hinted at their four-year hiatus in the title for their 2018 album A Moment Apart. Only time will tell what lies ahead for the dance-maestros however, but here’s hoping we get a couple more albums from them before their time is up.

ODESZA’s new single ‘The Last Goodbye’ is out now. You can buy/stream it here.
