The Oscar winner’s return to crime will take place in HBO’s Wise Guys

Hollywood’s favourite crime boss Robert De Niro is set to slide back into his kingpin roots with his upcoming film, the 79-year-old singing on to play real life mafia bosses Vito Genovese and Frank Costello in the upcoming film Wise Guys.

Based on the book of the same name by Nicholas Pileggi and helmed by director Barry Levinson , the film will follow De Niro’s Genovese and his attempt to have arch nemesis Frank Costello (also played by De Niro) murdered. In real life, the attempt failed and Costello ultimately retired after sustaining serious injuries from the attack, so it’s unclear as to whether the retelling will stay true to real life events, or go the Tarantino route and rewrite history.

Also attached to the project is esteemed producer and the man behind the Rocky Franchise, Irwin Winkler. The average age between the the director/actor/producer trio is 83 years old, so it’s looking like we’ll be getting a gangster movie of old with the new epic. For now, revisit one of De Niro’s most iconic scene from the gang epic, Casino, below, and get keen.
