After having already played alongside the likes of Tia Gostelow, Hayley Mary, Holy Holy and more, Betty Taylor have finally released their debut single, ‘Stallin’…

Sunshine Coast two-piece Betty Taylor (made up of Sophie Patrick and Kayla Smart) have well and truly made a splash this Tuesday arvo, releasing their very first single, ‘Stallin’, out into the world. Written about that inevitable anxiety you get when you fall for someone, but aren’t ready to let your guard down, the groove captures that youthful air of young love in spades, but through a feel-good lens that you can’t help but revisit again and again.

The sonics of the single showcase the duo’s affinity for harmony and penchant for melody, leaning into their folk and indie-rock influences for a punchy track that oozes both attitude and vulnerability. The repetition of the hook “I’m fallling/and I hear you calling out” is infused with plenty of emotion, and with the help of the airy backing vocals and steady guitar line, it maximises in resonance with every utterance.

The accompanying music video (which we’re also premiering today) doubles down on the fun and carefree nature of the sonics, playing like a daytime Aussie sitcom as we follow Betty Taylor (accompanied by their bandmate besties Claire Chittick on bass and Katie Ishaque on drums) as they churn out a rendition of ‘Stallin’. Shots alternate between singer Sophie performing the track in her room (a hairbrush makes a mean microphone) and at a house party in what’s an haze of teenage daydreams and romance. It all culminates in a hilarious kiss sequence at 3:40 as we get a contrast between reality and make-believe, consequently maintaining the humour of the single whilst furthering its narrative.

It’s a stellar first track from a duo with plenty of potential and talent. Be sure to keep up with Betty Taylor on Facebook and Instagram to keep up with their future releases. For now, check out the official video for ‘Stallin’ above.
